Synopsis

The Latin suffix -ensis in “maipoensis” means “originating from”. Ecologists have discovered numerous new species within the Mai Po Nature Reserve and named them after “Mai Po”, such as the Mai Po Bent-winged Firefly Pteroptyx maipo, the Mai Po Box Jellyfish Tripedalia maipoensis, and the moth Thalassodes maipoensis.

Mai Po Nature Reserve boasts rich biodiversity and is managed by WWF-Hong Kong. In addition to providing basic facilities such as boardwalks, an education centre, and bird hides, habitat management is the true foundation of this biodiversity: water levels in the traditional gei wai are periodically adjusted to provide food for waterbirds, water buffaloes are introduced and rice is planted to offer year-round foraging and roosting habitats for migratory birds. The significance of “maipoensis” goes beyond simply denoting species discovered in Mai Po—it also honours the dedicated management team working tirelessly behind the scenes.
